Aiden Archer was preparing for his third year teaching at Hogwarts. He had a lot to do… It wasn’t like he was going to vary his lesson plans too much from the previous year… aside from eliminating some little spells that the first years couldn’t handle… but other than that… he still had a lot to do.
The first and second years were the easiest; he simply set out a quiz for the first day, one that would let him know what they knew and what they didn’t know. Give him a little basis for what to teach and what to expect as reactions when he taught. The third year was one of his favorites, and his dresser in the corner of the classroom shook violently as the boggart inside tried to escape. Aiden shuddered at the thought; he knew what his boggart was… he just hoped that he wouldn’t have to let his students see it. He was rather embarrassed and horrified at the thought of his brother’s wife popping out of that thing.
Aiden had to remember to head down by the Care of Magical Creatures menagerie thing… he had to pick up some hinkypunks for the first class. But… if the professor wouldn’t let him have them… he guessed he could settle for some Cornish pixies, although they weren’t as fun. In fact, they were quite a nuisance.
It was just as he was finishing up his lesson plan that he received a note… from the Headmistress herself. Aiden hadn’t really talked to the woman… in fact… the idea of her even being remotely related to Voldemort freaked Aiden out to no end… He wasn’t too keen on being in the office with her… but alas he had forgotten to run hi lesson plans by her. Luckily the Welcome Back Feast had ended a bit early, and he left his classroom to stop by his office before meeting with the Headmistress.
Aiden always hated the start of term… getting to know the new faces and such. It was a lot of work… and he kind of had a bad reputation with students that were trouble. Unfortunately he lost a lot of students after their sixth year… Aiden tended to give hard tests. But he didn’t see them as hard… if the students were paying attention during class there wouldn’t be a problem with them knowing the answers to the test… Aiden had gotten himself into trouble last year with his third year exam. He had a redcap and the damn gnome actually hurt one of the students. True, Aiden had sort of laughed… but it wasn’t funny, and he’d gotten a warning. See? He really is oblivious to people’s feelings…
Being as lost in his own world of Defense Against the Dark Arts, he definitely did not notice that Helena was coming to him, and when he took a step out of his office he all but collided with the woman. He jumped.
”Ah, Professor Riddle,” he coughed slightly at her name, ”Won’t you come in?” he inquired, giving her a once over before stepping to the side to allow her to enter. Did she always look that… good? Aiden gulped. NO.

Did you hear? The headmistress is He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named's daughter.
I heard she's gone dark side, and we're all being used as a cover so she can resurrect her father.
Really? I heard she's trying to atone for killing people, and that's why she became the Headmistress.
Guys, would you stop? Professor Riddle is a brilliant teacher and a great Headmistress...
Helena couldn't help but frown as she made her way out of the Great Hall before the feast had even ended. The rumors were starting again, as they always did, with older students passing on the truths of her heritage to the 1st years. They in turn would send letters home to their parents complaining that Voldemort's daughter was the Headmistress. Of course, she'd been cleared years ago by both skilled aurors, psychics and the Ministry. She was clean. And so she was quite capable of teaching at Hogwarts. Still, she hated all the rumors. You'd think after 3 years of already teaching at Hogwarts, they would've stopped by now. Not that it really mattered all that much... she had more important things to deal with. Her robes billowed around her as she walked, the emerald green material emphasising the current green state of her eyes. Though, after the continuation of rumours in the Great Hall, they had previously been a rather angry shade of red. Thankfully no one had seen that.
"Impudent brats," she breathed, forcing a smile back onto her features, and willing her hair color to return to it's shimmering blonde base, rather than the fiery red it was turning in to. Thanks to her mother, that happened a lot. The welcoming feast would take some time to finish, what with students trying to sample every dish laid out before them, and Helena had pressing matters to address, such as the new lesson plan for the Defense Against the Dart Arts class. Of course, she'd only been the Headmistress for the past year, making this her second year, but she'd been a teacher before that, and had heard of the... accident, in Professor Archer's class. Involving a redcap. In all actuality, she found it most amusing, but would never actually tell him that, for fear it might damage her reputation as Headmistress. Of course, she knew what he must think of her... with her last name.
All she ever remembered of her childhood was that her mother had been taken by the Dark Lord, for more than a year, and when she'd returned, the woman had been pregnant. Helena had been her saving grace. Growing up had been difficult when your mother kept you on the run and away from any signs that Voldemort was near. But, thankfully, his end meant she could live freely. And so she had. Unfortunately when your mother has a name like Black, and your father is the notorious Dark Lord Voldemort who slaughtered thousands to get what he wanted, you can never 'live freely'. Her time at Hogwarts was filled with people keeping their distance, teachers keeping their eye, and fellow Slytherins admiring her. That was the last thing she wanted. Heck, she hadn't even wanted Slytherin house to begin with. The hat had chosen for her, before even being placed on her head. Still, no one had ever bothered her while she was at school. They were all too afraid that she was gonna kick someone's ass, or hex them, or even kill them, if they got on her bad side. In the end though, she'd graduated with top marks, with the occasional bad report of siccing snakes on her fellow classmates - it wasn't her fault she was a parselmouth without truly realising it till after graduation - and it wasn't long until she had been asked to return as a teacher.
Ohh, and she'd loved Potions. The only thing that made it better was when McGonagall promoted her to Headmistress, and head of the Order, before she died. Now, here she was, making her way to the DADA Professor's office to look over his lesson plan the night before classes started. That was... smart. A wry smile met her lips and she continued on, stopping just outside his office when he emerged, barely having enough time to step back before they collided.
"Professor Archer," Helena managed a small smile as she dipped her head, stepping past him into his office as her eyes gave him a small appraising glance. This was the first time she'd properly met the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher without a huge crowd. "Thank you, and excuse my intrusion this late at night. I would have gone over the lesson plan with you sooner, but there was much to deal with..."

Aiden nodded at the Headmistress. He hadn’t really… officially met her yet. In fact, this is the first time aside from his review last year that he’d actually talked with her. Even then there was a board, making sure that what he’d done wasn’t on purpose. Why would Aiden make a redcap attack a student? He wouldn’t, which was exactly his point. The stupid thing went against its directions. Not only that, but the students had leaned a lot about redcaps prior to the exam… so he should have known what to do when the redcap did what it did.
But now, it didn’t matter how much truth there was in Aiden’s side of the story, the kid’s parent still owled in and wished to have him fired. Because his story was true… (this is where veriteserum comes in handy) but now he had to get his lesson plans checked over prior to every year. Why it was so late he didn’t know… but it didn’t matter. He had to get it over with one way or another.
”Professor Archer. Thank you, and excuse my intrusion this late at night. I would have gone over the lesson plan with you sooner, but there was much to deal with…”
Aiden didn’t know if that was a clue or something for him to ask what was going on… but he didn’t bother to ask. He wasn’t there to make friends.
”Have a seat,” he offered, gesturing to one of the plush blue chairs across from his desk. His office was rather neat and tidy, not a thing out of place. He had multiple filing cabinets and his desk he had charmed into a deep blue color. Aiden really liked blue… and aside from that, it was a lot like his personality.
Aiden handed over his lesson plan after giving it a quick once over. He didn’t change anything from the previous year, because he thought that the parent was unjust. He shouldn’t have to change what he wanted because of a stupid parent and a kid that didn’t pay attention in his class. As he’d mentioned so many, many times before, if the kid was paying attention, he wouldn’t have had any trouble with the exam.
Aiden leaned onto his desk and rested his chin in his hand as the Headmistress looked over his lesson plan. ”I didn’t change anything. I don’t believe that I should have to change for a student that does nothing but pass notes and defies rules constantly. He would have known what to do with that redcap had he been paying attention,” he defended his stance…

It was amusing. Aiden held the same sort of stature around her that everyone else did. As if they all expected her to go 'boom' and kill the lot of them. While she liked the fact that no one bothered her with useless shit, it did get quite irritating. It meant she didn't really have any friends. No one she could talk to about anything, unless you count the green viper in her office, the one so like her father's old familiar. She hadn't seen Nagini personally, but her mother had told her about the Dark Lord's creature. And it was strange, but she supposed her ability to talk to snakes meant she was more in touch with them, and in a sad way they were her only friends.
Her attention shifted back to Aiden as he bid her sit down, then handed her his lesson plan. Then, she couldn't help the smile that met her lips. He hadn't changed it from the previous year. Good move. She'd believed, like he had, that if the student had been paying attention he would've been fine with the redcap. her eyes skimmed the plan, before she nodded, handing the paper back to Aiden after a moment of thought.
"I could not agree more, Professor, the children need to understand that we don't work around them, we're here to teach them everything we know.
